MSc, PhD, Molecular Biologist & Geneticist
Postdoctoral Researcher
Scholarship holder, Department of Medicine, DUTH

Dr. Eirini Filidou is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Laboratory of Pharmacology, Department of Medicine, Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), Greece. In 2011, she obtained her first degree at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, DUTH, Greece as she had successfully completed her thesis on “The study of the effect of proinflammatory cytokines in fibrogenesis in Crohn’s disease. The role of myofibroblasts.”. Later in 2013, she received her Master’s Degree on “Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics” at the Department of Medicine, DUTH, Greece, while her Master’s thesis was the “In vitro preclinical study of IP-1510, a new receptor antagonist of IL-1, for IBD”. In 2018, she completed her PhD on the “Study of interactions between inflammation factors and subepithelial myofibroblasts in IBD in search of new therapeutic strategies”, at the Department of Medicine, DUTH, Greece. From 2010 until June 2021, she had an honorary post in the Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology of the Department of Medicine DUTH, Greece, involved in therapeutic drug monitoring using automated chemical analyzers. From June 2020 to May 2021 she was a Research Associate in Subproject 3 "Democritus University of Thrace, participation in the Network" of the Operation "STRATEGIC EXPANSION OF THE GREEK BIOBANKING", while from June 2021 until today, she is Research Associate at the “Individualised Medicine & Pharmacological Research Solutions Center - IMPReS” (MIS 5047189) which is implemented under the Action “Support for Regional Excellence”, funded by the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” (NSRF 2014–2020). Since 2014, she is a member of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organization and the Greek Society of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Dr. Filidou’s main research interests lie in the mucosal immunology and pathogenesis of intestinal inflammation and fibrosis of Crohn's Disease and the molecular mechanisms involved. Specifically, she has focused on studying the cellular interactions of the intestinal mucosa, which include the interplay of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic mediators between the epithelial cells and the myofibroblasts. Apart from the human host, Dr. Eirini Filidou has also been studying the role of intestinal microbiota and its interactions with the host’s cells. Recently, she has been implicated in the field of regenerative medicine, as she has been involved in culturing human embryonic stem cells, isolating stem cells from peripheral blood and developing intestinal organoids. She has published or been a co-author in 19 scientific articles with h Factor (Citations-Scopus) 7. She has participated in more than 40 scientific abstracts in conferences and has been the recipient of awards five times for her work.
